Simple Ways to Keep Your Skills Fresh and New
It’s all too common – mastering a skill only to get stuck in a rut after. However, the beauty industry is extremely competitive. To become the “go-to” salon or stylist in your area, you have to get and keep people talking and stand out from the crowd. In other words, stay out of that rut!
One of the best ways to keep your customers happy, and gain new clients is to keep your training up-to-date, offer the latest styles and services. When you show new techniques to your clients, you gain their trust and respect. In turn, they end up recommending you to others. Besides, when a new person comes in to request something, you want to make sure you know what they’re asking for, right?
Have we convinced you that ongoing training is super important? We hope so. And best of all, it doesn’t have to cost a lot of time or money. Here are a few easy tips to keep your skills fresh:
Follow Trade and Fashion Sites/Publications
This is the simplest, least expensive way to keep up with current trends and techniques. Popular fashion and beauty sites will show you what’s hot right now, and therefore what clients may be asking for.
Trade Shows and Conventions
Much like above, conventions and trade shows showcase the latest offerings of new products and techniques that you need to know. And PS – they’re also a great way to network and get your name out there, too.
Contact Your School
Most hairdressing and beauty schools will offer their alumni opportunities to upgrade every so often at a low – or sometimes NO – cost. These are typically evening events or online seminars. If you haven’t kept in touch, reach out to your school now.
Online Resources
The world of technology has made it so we can all have training right at our fingertips! As mentioned above, you can often find courses through beauty training schools, but even following stylists and beauty personalities you admire on social media or YouTube can help you pick up some important new tips and tricks.
But don’t forget to give back. If you’re an expert in something, let others in on the secret by sharing your training tips online. It will help you get your name out there, too.
In-Salon Training
Get your staff together for some ongoing training a few times a year. These evening or Saturday morning events can include skills workshops, new equipment demonstrations and social management skills. You can have your staff share their own new techniques with each other or bring in an expert.
This will not only create some comrade among your staff but keep everyone up-to-date.
Keep Up With Green Resources
If you can find a sustainable way to do your craft, that’s a step-up on most of your competition. In 2018, sustainable and organic products are becoming increasingly important to clients. Keep up with these services, and make sure you let your clients know exactly what you offer.
Remember: You are your brand so keep it fresh. People will notice!

Green Resources
We are large supporters and contributors to the green initiatives in health, beauty and non-toxic body care. When we saw a market in desperate need for positive change, we made the necessary moves to bring Green Circle Salons and Davines to the west coast of Canada in a big way. By creating The Salon Movement, we sought to become a resource for other salons and businesses looking to go green and provide unwavering support. By choosing to foster our passion for the environment and hair, we’re striving to bring more awareness to people and prove that it’s worth it. Now we know that focusing on hair and body isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. So instead, we wanted to write this blog post to showcase other green initiatives we believe are important and necessary. A green initiative is defined as being a movement with the goal of offsetting Greenhouse gases. Below is a comprehensive list of resources that are a great place to start when wanting to go more “green.”
Documentaries:
Cowspirary – This documentary has stirred up a lot of controversy surrounding the link between meat consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. “The impact of livestock production on the planet is too often underestimated and overlooked.” The power of the livestock industry and the pull they have is enormous. This doc sheds light on an area no one wants to talk in-depth about.
Chasing Ice – The shrinking of the world’s ice caps is very real and visible evidence of climate change. James Balong, an environmental photographer, showcases the intense shrinkage taking place in “Chasing Ice”.
Blogs:
The Green Market Oracle – This comprehensive blog centres around the “convergence of sustainable capitalism and the global environment”. It’s run by Richard Matthews, a consultant, eco-entrepreneur, sustainable investor and writer. With a full list of resources and discussion about serious green-related issues, we highly recommend taking a look.
Ecochick – This cute and quirky blog focuses on food, travel, fashion, style and life for green-conscious women. The “ecochick is a consumer who’s tired of ‘environmentally friendly’ really meaning ‘expensive, inconvenient and ugly’. It’s time to make living green mainstream, fun, fresh and cool.” This is a great blog for moms and women interested in how they can make their lives more eco-friendly.
Businesses:
Organic Ocean – This small west coast company aims at providing consumers and local chefs sustainably-harvested seafood. With the world’s seafood levels at an all-time low, companies like these are integral to supporting our oceans ecosystems.
