Sneaky Ingredients To Watch Out For

May 5, 2018 By themovement1 Leave a Comment

Sneaky Ingredients To Watch Out For

Anything you put on your skin absorbs into your body so don’t you want to make sure you’re putting on the best? Even some sustainable beauty products labelled “natural” aren’t as natural as they advertise. The list is long (sadly) but here are some of the most common questionable ingredients which often make their way into beauty products. If you see any of these, put that bottle back on the shelf and walk away!

Phthalates

Phthalates are all too commonly seen in beauty products yet should be avoided at all costs. Studies have shown some correlation between phthalates and endocrine disorders which can possibly lead to certain cancers.

Unfortunately, some manufacturers disguise their use of phthalates by using the term “fragrance”. Make sure the products you’re buying have transparent ingredient lists so you know exactly what’s in them and what that “fragrance” really is. Which brings us to our next sneaky ingredient…

Fragrance

As we’ve just told you, “fragrance” can be an evil term. Some products smell amazing and that’s because of the natural herbs or essential oils added. However, other products smell amazing due to chemicals like phthalates being added.

Once you use products that have a true natural scent, you’ll start to notice the difference. Until then, watch for “added fragrance” and other indecipherable names on chemical labels. Fragrance can also be an irritant so also try buying fragrance-free.

Alcohol

Alcohol is added to a lot of skin care products because it makes your skin feel cool and fresh temporarily. But after just a few uses, alcohol can lead to irritation and excess sensitivity of the skin.

Watch out for alcohol-based ingredients, and look for terms like methanol, isopropyl and ethanol. These are scientific names for different types of alcohol.

Colours

Other than to make it look fun, there’s no reason to add dyes or colours to any product. Colours listed with numbers such as “Red 3” and “Yellow 5” are especially dangerous and can lead to behavioural issues in kids, as well as skin irritation.

BPA

OK, so BPA (or Bisphenol-A) won’t actually be on the product’s ingredient list but it’s quite likely to be in the packaging. Even if you’re buying sustainable beauty products with only organic ingredients, if it’s packaged in plastic containing BPA, it may cause you problems anyway as the packaging can leech into the liquids.

BPA is linked to hormonal imbalances, not to mention the damage it can do to the earth. Look for earth-friendly packaging on everything you buy.

What Next?

Luckily, many cosmetic companies are coming around and taking unnatural, dangerous ingredients out of their products, including the sneaky ones. It may take a little research but look for transparent companies, ones who are open about what’s on their ingredient list and what those unrecognizable terms on their labels really mean.

We use and recommend Davines products to everyone for both home and salon use. It’s a fantastic company that cares about the earth and your body. If you’re not sure where to start, please read our previous blog post, Davines products your salon MUST carry.

Summer 2018 Hair & Beauty Trends

April 25, 2018 By themovement1 Leave a Comment

Summer 2018 Hair & Beauty Trends

When new seasons are upon us, it’s not just fashion trends that change, beauty trends do, too. It’s important to stay on top of what’s hot so you know what your clients are looking for when they ask. Not only will it keep you fresh, it’ll show how much you really care about what your clients need.

Here are the top beauty trends predicted to be huge (and heavily requested) this summer:

HAIR

It’s All About The Texture

Texture will be huge this summer. Think natural, loose waves and lots of movement. The “bedhead” look is back in a big way.

Give your client a wash-and-go style haircut along with a few simple products such as Davines This Is A Volume Boosting Mousse and Davines LOVE HAIR SMOOTHER to smooth down any flyaways and excess frizz.

Ponytails

Summer is hot and people want to pull their hair back and forget about it. Enter the ponytail.

The low ponytail is a sleek way to keep it all pulled back and still be work-friendly and stylish.

To stay on-trend, opt for a fancy accessory or nice ribbon to tie it back instead of a plain old elastic. Suggest Davines THIS IS AN INVISIBLE SERUM to keep it sleek but leave out a few hairs to keep it more casual.

Adding some volume to the crown before putting hair in a ponytail easily combines two popular styles into one cool, yet fairly easy, hairstyle.

Curls

Encourage your clients to embrace their natural curls this season. Curls can be another easy, wash-and-wear style with the right cut and products such as Davines THIS IS A CURL BUILDING SERUM for added elasticity and shine.

Short Cuts

When ponytails just won’t cut it, summer is a great time to chop it all off. Give your client a texturized style to show off their amazing facial shape and features.

Pixie short is in but so is a choppy bob if they’re not ready to say goodbye to so much hair.

BEAUTY

Glitter & Glow

This summer we’ll be seeing a lot more than the usual dewy skin, everyone will be seeking glow in excess. Show your client how to use a shimmery bronze highlighter all over the peaks of their face. For your more flamboyant clients, add some extra sparkle or glitter. Don’t overdo it, though. Remind them that a little goes a long way.

Nail Art

Funky, bold polishes and fun designs are going to be on everyone’s nails this summer. Get some experience creating dots, stripes and small pictures on nails. Focus on a single nail to make a statement or if you want to get really flashy, bling them all up.

Vivid Colours

A pop of electric blue eyeliner, a sweep of lime green eyeshadow, a cherry red lip stain or a bright mod pink lipstick are all great additions to your client’s makeup look this summer. Give them a few different ideas for that punch of colour but remind them not to go overboard. Only enhance one feature at a time.

Sustainable Beauty

Sustainable beauty is so popular now, there are so many body and earth-friendly beauty lines with incredible colours that keep up with seasonal trends.

We love suggesting Jusu Body products to our clients for their luxurious smelling skincare and Elate cosmetics for their beautiful, wide range of colours.

As with keeping up with trends, it’s important to keep up your skills, too. We’ve already given you a few simple ways to keep your skills fresh and new, now you’ll be ready to completely WOW your clients.

Sustainable Spring Trends

April 15, 2018 By themovement1 Leave a Comment

Sustainable Spring Trends

We’ve said it before and we’ll be saying it again (and again and again…), 2018 is THE year of sustainable beauty and fashion. Since April is Earth Month and with spring in the air, what a great time to jump on the trend — if you haven’t already, of course.

If you’re not already, follow our Spring into Sustainability tips to green up your salon and life in general. However, there are some popular trends you can jump on right now which you can start utilizing in your shop and passing along to your clients.

Help Your Hair

Natural, individualistic styles are what’s in for hair this Spring. Beachy waves, a lot of texture, and short pixie crops are what we’re already seeing everywhere. These styles are easy to maintain if you have the correct styling products.

You know by now how much we love Davines, it’s a HUGE part of what The Movement is all about. There’s a Davines product for every type of hair along with fantastic face and body care, as well. If you’re still not sure where to start, read our top recommendations here.

Getting involved with Davines during the month of April helps support Sustainable Beauty Month and Davines has decided the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation is this year’s most deserving recipient. This foundation aims to plant 5,000 trees in Peru where about 357 local families will benefit. And be sure to support the event by following #SBMONTH2018 on your favourite social media platform.

Get Beautiful

Beauty trends this Spring are fresh, clean looks with a hint of glitter. Keep it natural, except for when you want to POP!

Clean beauty products are picking up steam and becoming more popular all the time. Choosing beauty products which aren’t filled with dangerous chemicals benefits your skin as well as the earth.

A lot of popular brands are dropping the more dangerous chemicals from their products which is a huge step in the right direction, but we still prefer to support original eco-friendly companies such as Jusu. This fabulous company was started as an organic juice bar in Victoria, BC in 2014. Using the vitamin and mineral rich pulp from the juice resulted in them creating clean, organic products to nourish the skin and body. What a great way to be healthy AND eco-friendly.

Be Fashionable

Sustainable fashion is a whole lot more than just plain, flowing hemp dresses. Most designers are becoming more mindful of the fabrics they’re using, incorporating more sustainable materials while still producing on-trend garments.

Fur (mostly faux, luckily) has been spotted on boots, hats, purses, and everywhere else you can imagine for the past few seasons. Enter “denim fur” for us eco-conscious trend followers! Created by ISKO (the world’s largest producer of denim) along with “designer of nature” Fashion designer Tiziano Guardini, this “fur” is made from certified-organic cotton and pre-consumer recycled cotton. We’ve been seeing tons of reviews and praise for these sustainable cotton creations on social media. This means you can be in style while still being eco-conscious.

How To Celebrate Earth Month

April 5, 2018 By themovement1 Leave a Comment

How To Celebrate Earth Month

April is EARTH MONTH! The Salon Movement and its awesome partners are already committed to living as green and eco-friendly as possible and this is the perfect time to get the rest of you on board to helping the earth — and yourself — be a lot healthier.

Start A Challenge

Challenge your family, friends or colleagues this April to see who can be the most sustainable. At the end of the month, find out who has the lowest hydro bill, who reduced their food waste the most, who produced the least amount of garbage — or ALL the above! A challenge with a small prize will motivate people to do their best and learn some good habits that stick with them far past April.

Use Alternate Forms of Transportation

It’s the start of spring and most people are excited to shed their boots and parkas and get outside. It’s not too hot or too cold so walking and biking are ideal at this time of year. Commit to using your car as little as possible during April. If biking or walking is not an option for your commute, try using transit or carpooling if it’s available to you.

Go Veggie

April is the perfect time to start a garden and grow all sorts of wonderful fruits and vegetables. You get some fresh air and relaxation time while being productive. This month is usually the start of community markets where you can get some great local produce. Support your local farmers and learn some new tips and tricks you can put towards your own garden.

Take that wonderful crop of veggies you bought and/or grew and find recipes to use them all. Commit to trying at least one vegetable a week that you have either never tried before, or you thought you didn’t like and find a way to love it.

Try using vegetables as the base of all your meals this month. We’re not saying you have to cut out meat completely but try to incorporate as many meat-free meals as possible. This will greatly help your health and the earth’s sustainability.

Don’t Buy Anything You Don’t Need

Take this month to think about your footprint and budget. Buying items you don’t need leads to increased clutter and less satisfaction for what we have. Make a commitment this month to buy only what you absolutely need. And if you do need something, buy sustainably. Sustainable beauty products, sustainable fashion, and supporting local eco-friendly companies should always be your first choice when you need something new.

Commit To Something Green Outside

Grab a group of friends or family and head outside to appreciate the natural beauty and do some good for the earth. Pick up trash at your local park or beach, or plant some trees in an area that needs it. You’ll feel good and, of course, the earth will, too!

Find More Tips

Did you catch our Spring into Sustainability blog post last month? Be sure to take a read through to find out more ways to help you on your way to being more sustainable at home and at work.

Happy Earth Month!

Why It’s Time To Join The Movement

If you or your salon is already part of The Salon Movement then you already know all the incredible benefits which come with membership to this amazing community. If not, we’re here to convince you.

Sustainability is here to stay, and your salon could be “the next big thing” your community needs. Let’s delve deeper:

WHY BE A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS?

You may be wondering what the benefits of being a sustainable business are. You know you’re doing a great thing for the earth, but is that where it ends? Not at all!

Your Salon Will Get More Recognition

Sustainability is huge and more people than ever are seeking out sustainable fashion, products and salons. This could mean you!

You Reduce Costs

At the beginning, you may need to invest more money to make your salon into an eco-friendly oasis. But the savings you’ll see will occur almost immediately and be well worth it in the long run.

Installing water-reducing showerheads and low-flow toilets will save you water, money and energy. Even switching to low-energy power bars and making sure lights and machines are turned off when not in use is a very inexpensive, simple start to sustainability.

You Reduce Waste

Using sustainable products and materials is so important to your footprint on the earth. You’ll notice an impact almost immediately and will likely save you significant money if you’re having to contribute to garbage services.

You End Up Healthier

You won’t believe how wonderful eco beauty products are these days. The right products will produce fabulous results on your skin and hair and you’ll glow inside and out from not using toxic chemicals. It also feels great to know you’re doing your part to help the earth.

WHAT DOES THE SALON MOVEMENT DO?

Our statement is to have “a unified grassroots movement of sustainability-conscious Davines stylists and salon owners who actively care and love our planet, culture, and craft.”
